On Route to Kenya

eV&B Bulletin: March 23, 2009

God bless you in Jesus’ name. I write to you on the eve of my departure for Kenya, already my second mission to Africa in this relatively young year. I write hoping to solicit your prayers for this mission, that we travel with the Lord’s good graces, under the shadow of his wing.

Psalm 17:8:
Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings.

I worry about the dangers of growing complacent regarding my travels to Africa. There is good reason for the truism, "Familiarity breeds contempt." There is nothing about getting yet another stamp on my passport that reduces the potential hazards of these trips. Quite the opposite is true. It is the man who thinks he is a good driver who will try to navigate through traffic, send a text message, and drink a cup of coffee all at the same time. I worry that I might consider myself an "experienced missionary." I worry that you might think I no longer need your prayers.

God willing, I will be flying out of Baton Rouge on the afternoon of 23 March. I will arrive in Amsterdam at mid-morning (Holland time), to begin a 12-hour layover before I depart for Kenya. I am happy that I will spend most of that time with my friend Mary Calpin and her family in Almere. By the time I get back to the airport, David Mantock will have arrived from Zurich, and we will fly out together at 8:45 PM.

We arrive in Nairobi on Thursday morning, where we expect to be met by Pastor Bonface Makanda, and Sis. Winfred Amwayi. Winfred is our host for this mission. Believe me, her preparation for this mission began many months ago. We will go straight to the bus terminal for the long journey westward to Kakamega. Then, on Friday and Saturday, I will present my seminar, If Ye Do These Things, Ye Shall Never Fall. On Sunday we will travel by bus eastward to a place called Harambee. From Monday to Friday, I will present my class on the spiritual gifts called In the Power of His Might. Saturday we will travel back to Nairobi, and on Sunday I will be the guest teacher at the Glory Church where Bro. Makanda is pastor. Then Sunday night, we will fly out to Amsterdam. Due to the time change traveling east to west, I will be home on Monday, 6 April.

2 Thessalonians 3:1-2:
Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you:
2 And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith.

Frankly, I don’t know who hates being exposed more, wicked men or Satan. Don’t think for a minute that everyone who has heard me speak in Kenya is thrilled that I’m coming back. Some people will wear a mask of congeniality for the sake of a handout, but when they don’t get what they want, they show their true colors. But it isn’t called the sword of the Spirit for nothing. On the other hand, there are Kenyans like Winfred and Bonface whom I am proud to be associated with, and I expect a good, vigorous mission. I pray that we fight a good fight, and that we heal the brokenhearted, preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, and set at liberty them that are bruised.

Without the Lord, we know we can do nothing. So once again we get to discover if Workers Together With Him is just a catchy name.

I am happy to say that my book, In the Power of His Might, is back from the printers. We will be sending out a complimentary copy to our supporters when I return home. It is 380 pages long with 44 chapters, but if I’ve done my job right, it should be easy and enjoyable to read.
